Witchcraft Legal Profession in Romania

 by  Kate James
Romania has declared witchcraft legal as a profession. Things have come a long way for the practice since the days that witches were burned at the stake for practicing the profession. However, some who practice witchcraft are not happy about the change.
Why are people upset that Romania declared witchcraft legal? Apparently people who perform witchcraft services will now have to pay taxes. The government is actually cracking down on tax evasion, and witchcraft is joined by astrology, embalming, valet parking and driving instructors as new groups that must pay taxes. It is not surprising that governments are looking for ways the increase revenue during the poor economy, and declaring certain jobs legal professions seems to be a good way to collect more money.
The legalization of witchcraft has been hotly debated in the region, and many witches have protested. Since Romania declared witchcraft legal, one witch named Bratara has plans to retaliate using black pepper and yeast to cast a spell that will create discord in the government. If she is successful, will Romania change the new law? It is hard to tell. Hopefully the lawmakers will not succumb to the people who practice witchcraft. If other people who work have to pay taxes, then so should they.

Astrology and Christianity

By Antonia ffoulkes-Shippy, Yahoo! Contributor Network

It is a respectable estimate that zodiacs are found in 80% of medieval churches. This may surprise modern Christians warned against what the Catholic Church calls the "new paganism." The trouble is that
even churchmen of old, dedicated to stamping out heathen custom, could not deny the presence of stars and planets and the more scientifically suspect idea of their influencing the motions of animals, vegetables, and minerals. The old adage "God rules the stars; the stars rule man." supported the idea that God alone had the final word when it came to celestial influence though such influence did exist.
The other factor in the puzzle of Christian use of zodiacs is that to people living without the organizing guidance of clocks and calendars, zodiacs imposed a system of organized time. Not only were months and days assigned to planetary ruers but the regular slices of time we call hours. Hence the "horoscope," literally 'examination of the hour' charted the position of heavenly bodies at a specific point in time.
There is also, in the depiction of the twelve astrological signs, a heavy unstated link to themes expressed in Ecclesiastes. "Time(s) for all things under heaven," are portrayed within each sign from the tilling of the soil in Aquarius' to the harvesting of the crop in Virgo. Even the common practice of blood letting was directed by the position of the Moon, in particular, due to its power to influence fluids. There is no doubt that medieval people held strongly to the idea, and practicality, of different times favoring different activity. The so-called "Labors of the Month" are commonly found proximal to illustrations of the heavenly band.
From the 9th to the 15th century, the zodiac is a common architectural motif in European churches, It is surprising to find stunning representations of zodiacs in synagogues of the first and second centuries, Common
Era. Moreover, he greatest Islamic scholars wrote extensively on the influence of the stars and depiction of the constellations can be found on Islamic artifacts up until the eleventh century. It is clear that ancient people of every faith were awed by the majesty of the heavens as proof of divine power.

Astrology can't be banned

Mumbai city-based NGO, Janhit Manch, had started a debate on  the issue " Is astrology a science or an art of making money " in the Bombay high court on March 2010.
A public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the manch and its convener Bhagwanji Raiyani, along with his associate Dattaram Kumkar, has questioned the validity of predictions by well-known astrologers, including Bejan Daruwalla, and unknown babas like Brahmarshi Shri Kumar Swami.
The PIL urged the authorities to ban articles, advertisements, episodes and practices promoting astrology and its related subjects like vastu, reiki, feng shui, tarot, palmistry, zodiac signs and rashifal.
Now on 28 April 2010, Astrology is a “4,000-year old time-tested science” and banning it is unjustifiable, Central government said in its affidavit that was filed in the Bombay High Court.
Advait Sethna, advocate for the central government, argued the Supreme Court had accepted astrology was a science and many universities included it as a subject.
Petitioner Bhagwanji Rayani has made several well-known practitioners of astrology and vastu-shastra a party to the petition. It includes famous astrologer Bejan Daruwala too.

Americans believe in Reincaration and Astrology

DALLAS (Reuters Life!) - Although most Americans are Christian and many are devout it hasn't stopped some members of the flock from believing in astrology, reincarnation or the ability of trees to trap spiritual energy.
A poll by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life shows a surprising number of U.S. adults claim to have had supernatural experiences such as ghost sightings or hold beliefs associated with the New Age movement or Eastern religions.
And some of them claim allegiance to more traditional faiths such as Catholicism or evangelical Protestantism.
"American religious folks hold a variety of views and there is overlap among their beliefs and practices. Many do not fit into simple boxes," said Pew researcher Alan Cooperman.
The poll released on Wednesday showed that three-in-ten Americans say they have felt in touch with a dead person and 18 percent say they have seen or been in the presence of a ghost.
Other Pew surveys have shown that relatively few Americans would identify an Eastern religion or New Age spirituality as their core faith. But about a quarter of those surveyed say they believe in aspects of Eastern religions.
Nearly 25 percent said they believed in reincarnation and 23 percent said yoga was a spiritual practice. Twenty six percent said they believed "spiritual energy" could be found in objects such as trees.
A quarter said they believed in astrology, while 16 percent of U.S. adults think that an "evil eye" exists or that some people can cast curses or spells on others. Among black Protestants the evil eye figure is 32 percent.
The number of Americans who profess a belief in astrology is about the same as the number who claim to be Roman Catholic. Nearly 30 percent of Catholics surveyed said they believed in astrology. Among Catholics who attended church each week the figure was 16 percent.
Much of this would be jarring to -- among others -- many evangelical Protestants, who account for one in four adult Americans and take their Bible very seriously.
Still, 13 percent of white evangelicals profess a belief in astrology and about 10 percent accepted the possibility of reincarnation. Although the percentages are lower than in other groups, they are high enough to curl the hair of a Southern Baptist preacher.
Researchers said they were careful to stress that reincarnation meant being reborn again and again in this world and did not refer to, say, the resurrection of Christ.
Evangelicals, who place a heavy emphasis on spiritual conversions, are much more likely than most Americans to have had "a religious or mystical experience -- that is, a moment of religious or spiritual awakening," according to the poll.
About half of Americans claim to have had such an experience but among white evangelicals the number is 70 percent and for black Protestants it is 71 percent.
The nationwide survey of around 4,000 adults was conducted in August. Interviews were done in English and Spanish.
