Gai Jatra or cow Festival

Today Nepal is celebrating Gai Jatra or cow festival. It is the procession of cows and is dedicated to God Yama – the god of death. It is observed the day after Raksha Bandhan and Janai Purnima.
People who had a death in their family during the previous year take part in the procession. People participating in the procession walk along with a cow and those not owning a cow take boys dressed like cow.
Historians are of the view that King Pratap Malla had once lost a son and the Queen was depressed. She stopped talking and reacting. The King made a promise that he will reward anyone who can make the queen laugh. so Gai Jatra is also a day for making merry jokes and satires. It is a day when everyone is allowed to make satirical comments on any one. Before Nepal became a republic, Gai Jatra was only the medium to satirize the kings of Nepal.

गाईजात्रा पर्व

दिवङ्गत आफन्तहरूको सम्झना तथा उनीहरूको आत्मशान्तिका लागि आज गाईजात्रा पर्व मनाइँदै छ ।
हिन्दुधर्म अनुसार यस पर्वका बारेमा पद्मपुराणमा उल्लेख गरेको पाईन्छ । यमलोकको मुख्यढोका वर्षभरि बन्द रहने र मत्र्यलोक अर्थात पृथ्वीलोकमा गाईजात्रा निकालेपछि यमलोकको ढोका खुल्ने र मृतआत्माहरुले यमलोक प्रवेशपाई मुक्ति पाउने गरुड पुराणमा उल्लेख भएको छ ।
गाई वा मानिसलाई गाईका रूपमा सिँगारेर नगर परिक्रमा गराउने प्रचलन अनुरूप सो पर्व मनाउने परम्परा छ ।
गाईलाई नगरपरिक्रमा गर्नाले वर्षभरि मृत्यु भएका व्यक्तिहरू गाईको पुच्छर समाई वैतरणी पार हुन्छन् भन्ने धार्मिक विश्वास छ ।
काठमाडौँ उपत्यकाका तीनै सहरमा मनाइने परम्परागत साँस्कृतिक उत्सव ‘गाईजात्रा’ आज भाद्र कृष्ण प्रतिपदादेखि आठदिनसम्म विभिन्न कार्यक्रमको आयोजना गरि मनाइन्छ ।
भक्तपुरमा देखाइने गाईजात्रा, अन्य ठाउँको भन्दा पृथक र मनोरञ्जक भएकाले हरेक भाद्र कृष्ण प्रतिपदाका दिन यहाँ करिब दुई लाख जात्रालुहरू आउने गरेका छन्। गाईजात्राका अवसरमा समाजमा विद्यमान विकृति र विसङ्गति उजागर गर्न सार्वजनिकरूपमा मनोरञ्जनात्मक तथा व्यङ्ग्यात्मक ढङ्गले विविध कार्यक्रमको आयोजना गर्ने र पत्रपत्रिकाहरूमा पनि सामाजिक कुरीतिलाई समेटेर हास्यव्यङ्ग्य अङ्क प्रकाशित गर्ने गरिन्छ ।

आज रक्षाबन्धन

आज देशभरी हिन्दुहरुको महान पर्व रक्षाबन्धन बाँधेर मनाईदै छ । शुक्लपक्ष पूणिमा तिथीका दिनमा ब्राम्हणहरु र तर्राई क्षेत्रमा दिदी बहिनीबाट रक्षा सुत्र (डोरो)बाँध्ने भएको हुनाले यस दिनलाई रक्षा बन्धन पनि भनिन्छ । यस पर्वलाई जनैपूणिमा पनि भनेर चिनिन्छ । शुक्लपक्ष पूणिमा तिथीका दिन हिन्दू धर्मवलम्बीहरुले शिवको मन्दिरमा गएर पुजा गर्ने गर्दछन् । व्रतन गरेका पुरुषहरुले आजकै दिन जनै फेर्ने परम्परा पनि चलिआएको छ ।

आज काठमाडौँको पशुपतिनाथ, ललितपुरको कुम्भेश्वर, रसुवाको गोसाइँकुण्ड, जनकपुरधामको गङ्गासागर तथा धनुषसागर, जुम्लाको दानसाधु, त्रिवेणीलगायतका स्थानमा पवित्र स्नान गरी महादेवको पूजाअर्चना गर्न भक्तजनको ठूलो घुइँचो लाग्छ । सत्ययुगमा दानवद्वारा लखेटिएका देवगणलाई गुरु वृहस्पतिले रक्षा विधान तयार गरी ‘जेले अत्यन्त बलशाली दानवराज बलि बाँधिए, त्यसैले म तिमीलाई बाँध्छु, यसले तिमी सुरक्षित बन, विचलित नहोऊ’ भनी डोरो बँाधेर जोगाएका थिए भन्ने पौराणिक कथनबाट चलेको  रक्षाबन्धनको परम्परा आज पनि त्यत्तिकै प्रचलित छ ।
"येनबद्धो बलिराजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबल । तेन त्वं प्रतिवध्नामी रक्षेमा चल मा चल " मन्त्र पढ्दै ब्राम्हणले यजमानको नाडीमा बाँधिदिन्छन् ।
यसैगरी आजको दिन देह शुद्ध गरी देवता, सप्तषिर् तथा पितृको नाममा तिल, कुशसहित तर्पण गरिने भएकाले यस पर्वलाई ‘ऋषितर्पणी’का नामले पनि चिनिन्छ ।यस दिन सप्तषिर्द्वारा कश्यप, अत्रि, भारद्वाज, गौतम, जमदग्नि, वशिष्ठ र विश्वामित्रलाई तर्पण दिइन्छ । नेवार समुदायमा आजका दिनलाई ‘गुन्हु-पुन्ही’ भनी मनाइने परम्परा छ । आजकै दिन गौतमबुद्धले आफ्नो कामशक्तिमाथि विजय प्राप्त गरेका थिए भनेर बौद्धग्रन्थको ललितविस्तारमा उल्लेख गरिएको छ ।यस दिन स्वयम्भूमा पनि ठूलो मेला लाग्छ ।
