KATHMANDU: Self proclaimed Astrologer Ratnanidhi Shukracharya has lodged an application at the Ministry of Federal Affairs, Constituent Assembly and Culture demanding to cancel all Panchangas and calendars prepared with the approval of Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Committee, saying that such calendars were mathematically incorrect and faulty.
Shukracharya has claimed that the Committee violated the mathematical rules by managing 32 days in the months of Asar and Shrawan and 29 days in Mansir and Magh.
Shukracharya claimed that as per the mathematical rules there should be only two months having 32 days and 29 days each in a year.
He has demanded action against some officials of the Committee alleging them of imposing their own mathematical rules in Panchanga and calendars.

Astrologer held for polygamy

By: Manjunath L Hanji
A tale of lies: Fake Astrologer Nityanand Shastri married five women and cheated more that 100 people across the state.
Belief in superstition cost several women in the city dearly when they befriended a pavement astrologer with a flair for marriage and race horses. The police arrested Nityananda Shatri (40) after Vijaya Saraswati, a devotee from the city lost Rs 20 lakh in cash and 50 grams of gold by falling for the charms of the fake astrologer. The police were aghast when they realised that they had just stumbled upon the tip of the iceberg and much more lay hidden below the surface.
Shatri fooled five women into marriage by giving them imitation jewellery and posing as an astrologer. He also extracted money from others for expensive puja ceremonies to solve their problems. Shatri, an electrician from Mangalore came to the city in 1998 in search of a job. After several failed attempts to make an honest living, he befriended Rangaraj, a pavement astrologer and decided to take up astrology. After learning the trade he extracted vast amounts of money from unsuspecting victims to conduct pujas, but instead he used it to bet on race horses.
All those women
Shatri targeted women mostly, and to impress them he gifted them dresses and imitation jewellery. Though he was already married to Komala of Kasaragodu in 2001, he made no attempt to hide his intentions of marrying his devotees.
In 2001, Shatri married Jayalakshmi in Ullal who was already married to another man. However, in 2003 she dumped him and was reunited with her first husband. In 2006, he married Pavitra in Mysore by posing as an astrologer, but she realised his real intentions and returned to her hometown after dumping him, following which in 2007 he married Vasanthi in Mangalore.
At Gangammanagudi,  Shatri impressed Vijaya Saraswati who gave him Rs 20 lakh and 50 grams of gold in 2009. He took the amount and went to Mngalore where he met Shakeela and using the same ruse, married her.
In his confession, Shatri said that he has cheated more than a hundred people across the state and that he has houses in Bangalore and Mangalore.
Police investigating the case are confused about where to begin. When they visited the homes of his many wives, they told the police that they were unaware of his polygamous lifestyle. Police continue to get complaints on a daily basis against Shatri, and though at present they have 26 complaints lodged, they expect it to cross 100 once the report is published.
Investigating officer BG Ratnakar, PI of Chamarajpet said, "We have been investigating for the last one month and are still getting interesting facts each day. He cheated over 100 people of over Rs 50 lakh. He doesn't have money now because he lost all the money on race horses and other games."
Exploits of a crook
In Chamrajpet, Nityanand duped Madhusudan of Rs 3.45 lakh, in Mysore he duped Jagadish Rs 1.10 lakh and Paduvarahalli Shivanna Rs 9 lakh, in Basaveshwaranagar duped Rs 2.5 lakh. He took gold ornaments in the name of religious ceremonies amounting to over Rs 4 lakh.

Witchcraft Legal Profession in Romania

 by  Kate James
Romania has declared witchcraft legal as a profession. Things have come a long way for the practice since the days that witches were burned at the stake for practicing the profession. However, some who practice witchcraft are not happy about the change.
Why are people upset that Romania declared witchcraft legal? Apparently people who perform witchcraft services will now have to pay taxes. The government is actually cracking down on tax evasion, and witchcraft is joined by astrology, embalming, valet parking and driving instructors as new groups that must pay taxes. It is not surprising that governments are looking for ways the increase revenue during the poor economy, and declaring certain jobs legal professions seems to be a good way to collect more money.
The legalization of witchcraft has been hotly debated in the region, and many witches have protested. Since Romania declared witchcraft legal, one witch named Bratara has plans to retaliate using black pepper and yeast to cast a spell that will create discord in the government. If she is successful, will Romania change the new law? It is hard to tell. Hopefully the lawmakers will not succumb to the people who practice witchcraft. If other people who work have to pay taxes, then so should they.

Astrologer Royal

The UK's favourite Astrologer Russell Grant is beaming with happiness at the wonderful news of HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton's engagement.
Although everyone remembers Russell Grant from the early days of TVAM and BBC Breakfast Time, Russell made history when he presented, in public, to Her Majesty The Queen Mother her very own Astrological Horoscope Forecast. At the time, Russell didn’t realise that he was the first astrologer in over 400 years to read the Stars for any members of the Royal Family - the last sovereign to have an astrologer was Queen Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen. As a result, the media dubbed him the "Astrologer Royal".
In subsequent years, Russell continued to have private meetings with members of the Royal Family, but never revealed who he met and what was discussed in the private meetings. Russell's relationship with Princess Diana was only revealed within Paul Burrell's book, and to this day Russell will not discuss any details of his Royal consultations.
On the announcement of their engagement earlier today, Russell said "I am completely over the moon at this exciting news. The Royal family have had some very hard times and sad losses to contend with over recent years. I deeply hope the Wedding will be a new era for the Royal's and bring some much deserved joy and happiness to the whole family. I don't believe anyone really understands how hard all the Royals work for the benefit of the Country, with the added pressure of 24 hour media coverage and interest”.
So what do the Stars predict for the happy couple..?
Russell commented “The couple, both 28, are of opposite zodiac signs. Like his mother, Diana, HRH Prince William (born June 21, 1982) is a sensitive and loyal Cancerian. Kate Middleton (born Jan 9, 1982) is a Capricorn. Both these Sun Signs are steadfast, loving and loyal, offering each other emotional commitment and mutual respect. As well as his strong sense of duty and responsibility and Kate’s friendly and conservative manner, the couple also value their privacy. Both have Mars in Libra indicating similarly high levels of passion, desire and action. Cancer and Capricorn are traditionalist signs, both believing in the sanctity of love and marriage. Miss Middleton, an ambitious Capricorn, meets many of the qualities for the most ideal bride for HRH Prince William. It would appear this couple were made for each other and astrologically…this is a marriage made in Heaven”.

DNA and glimpse of your child’s future

It is not just towards astrology that parents are turning to get a glimpse of their child’s future but the latest trend is a gene test or DNA test. DNA tests are more popular in Europe and in the United States.
More and more parents are opting for this technology that helps them determine what their child ability and what they are best in. The DNA test results can help parents make better decisions and concentrate on areas that the child would excel; well after all it’s all in their child’s genes.
A DNA test that can reveal your child’s talent comes at a cost of Rs. 3,000 and the test can be performed right after a child is born and up to 10 years. If parents get the DNA talent test done on their child at an early age they get more time to groom their talent.
For the gene test, saliva sample are collected that houses approx 10,000 cells of which scientists can then segregate up to 40 different genes. By analyzing the genetic code, scientists can identify the child’s IQ, focus, health, diseases, emotion, athletic and artistic abilities. But such tests are not available in Nepal.

Astrology can't be banned

Mumbai city-based NGO, Janhit Manch, had started a debate on  the issue " Is astrology a science or an art of making money " in the Bombay high court on March 2010.
A public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the manch and its convener Bhagwanji Raiyani, along with his associate Dattaram Kumkar, has questioned the validity of predictions by well-known astrologers, including Bejan Daruwalla, and unknown babas like Brahmarshi Shri Kumar Swami.
The PIL urged the authorities to ban articles, advertisements, episodes and practices promoting astrology and its related subjects like vastu, reiki, feng shui, tarot, palmistry, zodiac signs and rashifal.
Now on 28 April 2010, Astrology is a “4,000-year old time-tested science” and banning it is unjustifiable, Central government said in its affidavit that was filed in the Bombay High Court.
Advait Sethna, advocate for the central government, argued the Supreme Court had accepted astrology was a science and many universities included it as a subject.
Petitioner Bhagwanji Rayani has made several well-known practitioners of astrology and vastu-shastra a party to the petition. It includes famous astrologer Bejan Daruwala too.

NGO files PIL against Astrologer Bejan Daruwalla

Mumbai: Is astrology a science or an art of making money? The city-based NGO, Janhit Manch, has started a debate on the issue in the Bombay high court.A public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the manch and its convener Bhagwanji Raiyani, along with his associate Dattaram Kumkar, has questioned the validity of predictions by well-known astrologers, including Bejan Daruwalla, and unknown babas like Brahmarshi Shri Kumar Swami.
Taking note of the PIL, a division bench of justices FI Rebello and JH Bhatia on Wednesday directed the Union government, Maharashtra government and state director-general of police to file separate affidavits, stating the number of cases registered by the authorities under The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.
As Daruwalla and Brahmarshi were not represented by their advocates, the court issued notices to them to file their replies in four weeks. The more than 100-page petition pointed to several cases, including that of Indira Gandhi and Charan Singh becoming prime ministers, despite opposite predictions.
Hearing the submissions, justice Rebello remarked: “It is difficult to understand how wearing a stone on a finger can change one’s fate! But astrology is a science and that has been accepted by the Supreme Court.”
The PIL referred to Daruwalla, the “famous name of an astrologer and that numerologist among the elite class” who operates “somewhere from Colaba and Ahmedabad”, with his contact numbers on his website. When Kumkar contacted the astrologer’s office, Bapu, his personal assistant, told him to send a Rs25,000 cheque/cash for an appointment, which would be any time after 10 days; if the appointment was urgent, an extra charge of Rs3,000 would have to be made, the PIL stated.
Representing the Union government, advocate Advait Sethna told the court that even the SC had accepted that astrology was a science and many universities had included it as a subject. “Science, which is 4,800 years old, cannot be banned,” Sethna argued.
The PIL urged the authorities to ban articles, advertisements, episodes and practices promoting astrology and its related subjects like vastu, reiki, feng shui, tarot, palmistry, zodiac signs and rashifal.
“Local trains and newspapers are full of advertisements regarding astrological predictions. They misguide innocent people,” Raiyani told the court.
